You can get everything from hollowed out, dirty fuzz octave intervals to sweet sitar-like sounds to diamond-grit grinding power chords out of your guitar when you employ the Catalinbread Octapussy Octave Fuzz Pedal early in your signal chain. Drone melodies, atonal landscapes, cello-esque textures — they're all within reach, thanks to its custom-voiced preamp section, Atten (Attenuation) control, and Gain and Body controls. Modeled after the Octavia that Roger Mayer designed for Jimi Hendrix, this octave-jumping fuzz pedal opens up whole worlds of sounds. Topside controls for every style
Catalinbread is big on designing pedals that deliver dynamic impact without incessant tweaking; they encourage you to take full advantage of your guitar's pickup selector and volume/tone controls, making them part of each pedal's "control surface." The Octapussy is no exception to this, but a few confident setting adjustments will achieve wonders. Set your Atten knob low; you should only need it when Gain and Body are maxed and some reduction in output would result in better sound. Speaking of Gain: its whole range is usable, but if you crank it, you can expect blazing harmonics and a thrilling upper-midrange frequency boost. Turning the Body control clockwise will elicit a dramatic increase in the bass response and harmonic content.
Stack 'em deep for maximum impact
Don't put any buffered pedals in front of your Octapusy — they will kill its dynamic, interactive character. The Octapussy works best as the first pedal in your chain, with the only exception being a treble boost (such as the Catalinbread Naga Viper) that sends it a signal with the proper impedance. But after the Octapussy, another fuzz works great, as do amp-style overdrives like the Dirty Little Secret — and delays and modulation pedals can be stacked after the Octapussy for highly productive collaboration.
Power options and internal LED switch affect your tone
Catalinbread's goal is always "the best sound and response possible out of a pedal circuit." To that end, they've given you an internal switch that lets you turn off the LED indicator, which when turned on may have a slight (negative) impact on the pedal's response parameters. The diode may in fact "clamp" the audio, so you have the option of killing the LED. In addition, the pedal's designer encourages the use of a 9V carbon (non-rechargeable) battery to achieve the sweetest tone and best response, even though the Octapussy can also be powered with a 9V-18V DC external power supply.
