My Fuzz Face clone is based on the early Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Faces where silicon transistors were beginning to be used instead of germanium. This clone uses BC108 transistors to achieve its huge sound. Silicon transistors are more reliable, and less temperamental than their germanium counterparts when subjected to changes in temperature. These BC108’s do not disappoint. For being silicon, I love how warm and organic they feel, and they still clean up surprisingly well.
I wanted to stay true to the original circuit with only adding changes where they are truly needed without altering the tone. Vintage Fuzz Faces were designed to run on a 9V battery, nowadays we used wall adapters (which can introduce a lot of noise in vintage circuits) so a few upgrades have been added to my circuit to accommodate this:
-Reverse polarity protection.
-Power supply and RF noise filtering.
-Anti-pop resistor for a quiet true bypass switch.
My Fuzz Face uses a negative ground circuit and can be used with modern power supplies (9V DC only, no battery harness is available).
V2 Upgrades:
The new V2 model uses the same circuit as before, but we added a few enhancements that give more flexibility to the modern player:
Switchable transformer for allowing the pedal to be used AFTER buffered pedals. Completely removed from the signal path when disabled.
Internal BIAS adjustment for setting the best voltage every time, and allows the user to dial in their own BIAS setting.
Increased output volume. The standard fuzz face output section can reduce the output volume that is available from the circuit. We make a few simple tweaks on the output section that provide more output volume without changing the tone.
Other changes:
We also switched the enclosure size to the 125B like out other pedals for more of a ‘standard’ pedal size.
We now use UV printed graphics for a cleaner visual appearance.
Vintage style cloth wiring.
