    "Concepcion" Shipwreck
    O
    n July 23, 1641 the
Nuestra Senora De la Pura y Limpia Concepcion
set sail from Vera Cruz, Mexico in a fleet of 30 ships. The fleet encountered a violent hurricane in the Florida Straits which scattered and sank most of the ships. The 800 ton 135 foot
    Concepcion
suffered severe damage and was ordered to Puerto Rico for repairs.
    On
October 31, 1641, as a result of pilot error
, the treasure laden galleon struck the treacherous
    abrohos
reef some 80 miles northeast of Hispaniola, now the Dominican Republic. Despite valiant attempts by the crew, she soon broke-up on the reef and sank.
Recovery attempts over the next few decades failed. On February 20, 1687 sea captain William Phips discovered the legendary
    Concepcion
, recovering a portion of the treasure. Not for two hundred and ninety one years, on November 28, 1978 was the
    Concepcion
discovered by Burt D. Webber Jr., a 36 year old American. The second
    Concepcion
find has yielded a magnificent treasure of precious reales, gold artifacts, Ming Dynasty porcelains and many other valuable artifacts.
